Key-Cutting Tips You Need To Know

Key-Cutting Tips You Need To Know

We already know how important keys are. If you’ve ever been locked out of your home, or locked your keys inside your car, you’ll be even more familiar with the importance of keys.

When people have issues with access, they often choose to have a key cut, rather than have the locks changed completely. Key cutting is a much more cost-effective option, plus it is faster and easier.

What To Know Before Cutting Keys

Key cutting is not a DIY task to attempt. You would need a range of specialist tools and machinery, as well as a whole lot of experience if you want a key that works.

That’s why we recommend going to the professionals. Here are a few essential tips from our specialist locksmiths.

1.Try to use the original key – if you can

You can get better results if you replicate the original key, as opposed to taking a spare to the locksmiths. This is because the locksmiths can follow the original key, meaning it’ll offer the highest accuracy. That’s not to say you can’t clone a spare, it’s just advisable to use the original where possible.

2.Know what type of key you need

There are a couple of main types of keys, regular keys and security keys. Most locksmiths will offer key cutting for regular keys, for example for Chubb and Yale locks. However, not all locksmiths will offer a key-cutting service for security keys.

Security keys, as the name suggests, are used in situations where a higher level of security is required, this is often in commercial properties or business premises. Getting a security key cut is not impossible, you will just have to make sure you have a code number from wherever you purchased the key. If it was not you who made the purchase, it can get a little trickier, as you might need to ask the owner’s permission.

3.Make sure you have the correct blank

Key cutting relies on having the correct blank. If you try DIY key cutting, it’s unlikely that you’ll have a variety of blanks to choose from. A professional locksmith, in contrast, will have a range of blank keys to choose from, ensuring you get the best end product.

Don’t Try Key-Cutting At Home
