Is It Safe To Leave Your Keys In The Back Of The Door? A Locksmith’s Answer…

Keeping your house key safe is an essential part of home security. But sometimes, we keep them so safe… that we forget where we’ve put them.

There’s nothing more annoying than running around your home looking for your house keys when you’re running late for work. So, many people try to avoid this by leaving their keys in the back of their doors. Genius, right?

Our locksmiths are here to break it to you. Leaving your keys in the back of your door is not a good idea.

Here’s why you should avoid leaving your keys in the back of your doors.

Thieves Love Fishing

When criminals are prowling for a home to target one of the main things they are looking for is convenience. Naturally, leaving your home unlocked is the biggest mistake you can make.

Coming in a close second is leaving your keys in the back of the door.

Thieves will test your door handle to check if the property is unlocked. If they hear keys rattling in the back, they know they might have a way in. They will look for a nearby open window to ‘fish’ from. This involves using a long hook to grab the keys. Or, if your door has glass panes, they can simply smash one of the panes and let themselves in uninvited.

Not only should you avoid leaving your keys in the back of the door, but you should also avoid leaving them anywhere in sight. Do not leave your house keys anywhere near windows as this is an incentive for thieves.

Think About Home Insurance

Leaving your keys in the back of the door can even invalidate your home insurance in some cases. Many burglaries could have been easily avoided if the keys weren’t in the door/near the door. If a report finds that thieves entered your home using keys left in/near the door, your home insurance might refuse to pay out.
